Growing Broad Beans from Seed
Broad beans, sometimes known as fava beans, are one of the UK’s oldest domesticated crops. They’ve been grown in allotments and vegetable gardens for thousands of years, and are well-suited to the British climate. As well as being easy to grow, freshly picked broad beans are delicious, versatile, and packed with nutrients.
The two main types of broad bean seeds are longpods and Windsors (short pods). Longpods have kidney-shaped seeds, and are typically hardier, making them popular autumn sowing broad beans. Windsors are rounder in shape and are perfect for spring sowings.
Broad bean seeds can be sown directly into fertile, well-drained soil in October to November, or from February to April. Harvest the pods once they begin to swell, picking the lowest pods first.
