When to Sow Calabrese Seeds
Sow calabrese seeds indoors from March to April for early crops, or directly outdoors from April to June for later harvests. Early sowings benefit from starting under cover to provide consistent warmth. Outdoor sowings should be made once the soil has warmed up, as cooler temperatures can delay germination. Your calabrese broccoli will be ready to harvest from 3-4 months after sowing, from late summer through to early autumn. How to Grow Calabrese Seeds
To grow calabrese seeds, sow them thinly in trays or modules filled with fine seed compost, planting each seed approximately 1cm (1/2in) deep. Cover lightly with compost and place in a warm, bright spot. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. For direct outdoor sowing, plant seeds in drills 1cm (1in) deep and 15cm (6in) apart. You can sow calabrese seeds direct into the soil, but it’s best to grow them in pots before planting out.
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them to their final position, spacing plants and rows 60cm (24in) apart. Choose a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly and apply a nitrogen-rich feed to support strong development. Protect young plants from pests such as cabbage root fly with horticultural fleece or fine garden netting.
