When to Sow Cucumber Seeds

Cucumber seeds should be sown indoors or in a heated greenhouse from mid-February to March, or April for an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel. For outdoor cucumbers, sow seeds directly into the soil from late April to June when the risk of frost has passed, and the soil has warmed. If starting indoors, transplant seedlings into their final position once they have established and after the last frost. Pair with other salad favourites such as radish seeds and lettuce seeds.

How to Grow Cucumber Seeds

Sow cucumber seeds on their sides, about 1cm (1/2in) deep, into moist compost in small pots. Planting on their sides prevents rotting. Keep the pots in a warm, bright location, such as a windowsill or heated propagator. Once seedlings appear, maintain even watering and protect them from sudden temperature changes. Gradually harden off indoor-grown plants before transplanting into beds, containers, or grow bags. For climbing varieties, provide support with canes or trellis. Water regularly, feed with a general-purpose fertiliser, and pinch out growing tips that appear.
