Squash Seeds
Butternut squash plants are highly productive and produce fruits that have a remarkable sweet and almost nutty flavour. We love harvesting masses of fruits from our own trial ground and highly recommend roasting, baking and adding to soups, pies and risottos. Pairing butternut squash along with diced sweet potato makes a great base for a lot of vegetarian curries and casseroles.
Butternut Squash Walnut F1 is one of our favourite varieties to grow! Whilst varieties such as Butterbush F1 are the perfect choice for smaller growing spaces or gardeners looking to grow butternut squashes in containers. It's worth growing a few different varieties though as they'll all bring something different to your growing space!
How to grow Butternut Squash
Butternut squashes can easily be grown from seed. You can start seeds inside from as early as March and continue right through to May. If space inside is tight you can sow directly outside from May. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection. Keep plants well-watered and weed free. Butternut squash plants can be hungry feeders so feed steadily throughout the season. You can harvest butternut squash from September through to October. Harvested fruits store well if kept in a cool dry place. Many varieties will keep for months after harvesting, making it a most useful winter vegetable in the kitchen.
