Artichoke Plants
Artichoke plants prefer a sheltered but sunny position and can be grown in a container on the patio. Plant Jerusalem Artichoke tubers horizontally, 4-6"" (10-15 cm) deep, 12"" (30 cm) apart, allowing 12"" (30 cm) between rows. Globe Artichoke plants should be planted allowing 2-3ft (60-90cm) between rows. Well drained soil is particularly important for growing both varieties of artichoke.
Artichoke seedlings are intolerant of frost. In mild areas they can be planted out immediately but it is advisable to keep some fleece handy just in case there are still any chilly nights. In colder areas it is best to first plant them in a tray of compost for a few days at least. You can then harden them off by standing them outside in the day and bringing them in again at night. After finally planting them out we again recommend covering with fleece or some other protective material on any cold nights that might still occur. Read more
