  • Qualities: Dense, thorny evergreen producing glossy leaves, white spring blossoms, and heavy clusters of persistent orange-red berries.

Shrub style: Continuous summer bloom

  • Variety example: 'Rose Coral Gardens' (Floribunda)

When to plant shrubs in the UK

Shrubs can be planted throughout the year. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Autumn (October to late November) — This is the prime window for planting. Lingering ground warmth combined with autumn rain gives roots time to establish into the soil before winter dormancy sets in. This also means they need less irrigation the following spring.
  • Late winter through to mid-April — This is a great secondary window, as long as the ground isn’t frozen solid or waterlogged after heavy downpours.
  • Pot-grown shrubs — These can technically go into the ground at any point during the growing season. However, spring and summer planting needs more watering while root systems find their feet.

How to plant shrubs in garden beds and borders

With the right preparation, getting your shrubs into the ground is easier than you might think. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Dig the hole — Create a hole roughly twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. This helps the roots spread outwards into loose ground. Dig a square hole, as roots hitting curved walls tend to spiral, while square corners encourage them to punch into surrounding topsoil.
  • Check the root ball — Gently tease out congested root masses with your fingers to avoid root-bound circling.
  • Amend heavy soil — Carry out thorough soil preparation by incorporating garden compost and well-rotted manure, avoiding applying any concentrated fertiliser against bare roots to prevent scorching.
  • Set the planting depth — Position the top of the root ball completely level with the surrounding soil surface. Burying woody stems too deeply encourages collar rot.
  • Consolidate and settle — Backfill with soil, firming down with the heel of your boot to remove any air pockets, and give the base a deep soaking.
  • Protect the surface — Spread a 5cm to 7cm blanket of bark chippings or leaf mould for mulching to lock in moisture and stop any weed competition.

Pruning and seasonal care for long-lasting displays

Cut spring-flowering deciduous species like 'Forsythia Intermedia Weekend' after flowering stops, trimming back the young side shoots. This encourages strong stems during summer that will carry next spring’s flower buds.

For coloured dogwoods like 'Cornus Midwinter Fire', cut stems down to a low woody stool (around 7cm to 10cm above ground level) every two to three years in late winter.

Soak beds during longer dry spells, and apply fleece wrap to pot-grown evergreens if sub-zero freezes threaten container roots. See our guide on how to protect your plants in winter for more advice.
