Growing Brussels Sprouts from Seed

Brussels sprout seeds are often recommended to be sown between March and May, and harvested around early autumn. However, they can also be sown in July, making them ready to harvest just in time for your Christmas dinner! In fact, some people find it preferable to grow them in winter, as their flavour often improves after a frost. They are hardy vegetables, meaning that they are more than capable of growing in these colder conditions.

They should be sown four months before your first frost date, ideally in a spot with plenty of sun. However, they should be watered while it is warm to protect them from the heat. They will be ready for harvest when firm and around the size of a walnut, able to be picked as and when you need them.

Though Brussels sprout seeds will eventually take up quite a bit of room within your growing space, they compensate for this as they crop well for bountiful, fresh harvests.
