Growing Onion Plants

Onion plants are generally easy to grow, requiring very little maintenance and many varieties are disease-resistant.

With onion plants, it is important to make sure the ground is well prepared with plenty of rotted manure or garden compost. We recommend that before planting, the ground has had a top-dressing of a general fertiliser.

Set out plants approximately 10cm (4in) apart in rows 25cm (10in) apart. Keep plants well watered when the weather is dry, but stop watering when the bulbs become swollen. Harvest your onion plants when foliage begins to turn yellow and die back in August.
