To grow broccoli successfully, choose a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Space your plants adequately to allow heads to develop fully. Water regularly during dry spells, especially as the heads begin to form, and apply a high-nitrogen fertiliser to improve yields. Protect the young plants from pests such as cabbage white butterflies using fine mesh or netting.
