When to Plant Cabbages
Early-season cabbages should be planted outdoors in spring after the last frost, typically from March to April. Mid-season and late varieties like Kilastor F1 can be planted from spring through summer, around April to June, for an autumn or winter harvest. Chinese cabbage varieties, such as Kiseki F1, thrive when planted later in the season, from July to August, to avoid bolting. Always refer to the specific growing instructions provided with your plants for the best results.
How to Grow Cabbages
Cabbages thrive in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Before planting, dig in compost or well-rotted manure in a spot that gets full sun. Space the plants according to the variety’s size, typically 30-45 cm apart, with rows 45-60 cm apart; the bigger the variety, the more room it will need. Water consistently to keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells, and protect young plants from pests such as cabbage white butterflies using fine netting. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser throughout the growing season. Harvest cabbages when heads are firm and reach the desired size, cutting them at the base with a sharp knife.
