Carrot Seeds

Carrot Seeds

The carrot is a biennial that we grow as an annual. The cultivated carrot seems to have originated in Afghanistan around 5,000 years ago. In those days, its roots were purple or violet rather than the now-familiar orange. We believe an orange carrot was selected in the Netherlands around 1600 AD, but the story of how it was developed to honour the Dutch Royal House of Orange is probably fictional, although this was once widely believed.

Carrots are a highly versatile vegetable and are especially easy to grow, making them a popular choice for many gardeners. You can find these root vegetable seeds in many different varieties at D.T. Brown, with choices including many colours such as our Malbec seeds, Yellow Bunch seeds, and Snowman carrot seeds. Not only are they full of flavour, but these vegetables contain vitamins A, C, K and many more essential nutrients too. Shop our carrot seeds today for flavourful and healthy home cooking.

Growing Carrots from Seed

Growing carrots from seed is a very simple process. Carrots take up very little space, and some varieties are also suitable for growing in containers. They will be ready to harvest and enjoy three to four months after sowing.

Carrot seeds are generally recommended to be sown from early spring up until the middle of summer. However, they can also be sown in autumn to provide you with a delicious winter crop. In fact, carrots can taste sweeter after experiencing several frosts as they produce extra sugars to prevent freezing. If you’re curious to learn about more winter-ready vegetables, our blog on planting veg for winter has plenty more tips.

Growing your own carrots allows you to enrich your home cooking and experiment with different flavours, as carrot seed options are often in varieties that can’t be found in supermarkets. As a result, growing carrots can be a very rewarding and unique experience.

For further guidance on growing carrots, be sure to read our how to grow carrots guide, where you can find lots of advice to help you achieve the perfect crop.
