What to Sow and Plant Now
Hardy seeds and bulbs can generally be sown outdoors directly in autumn or early spring, as they can tolerate the cold. Common examples include autumn-planting bulbs like crocuses and daffodils, native wildflower seeds and root vegetables like carrots and parsnips.
Tender or half-hardy plants, such as tomato plants, peppers and many annual summer-flowering plants, should only be sown or planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed – typically in late spring to early summer. However, if growing from seed, many varieties can be sown in the colder months if started indoors or in a greenhouse. You can then gradually introduce plants to the outdoors in the spring.
How to Grow Seasonal Plants, Bulbs, and Seeds
Different plants have different care requirements, so always consult the sowing and growing instructions for your chosen varieties. Generally, you should prepare your seed trays, containers or garden beds with high-quality compost or soil, adding fertiliser if necessary. Make sure the area is weed-free and receives adequate sunlight – some flowers and plants can tolerate shade, while others prefer full sun.
Space your seeds or plants apart to give them room to grow, and water regularly until established. Climbing plants, such as beans and sweet peas, will benefit from support from a trellis or netting. In winter, make sure to provide frost protection for plants that can’t tolerate the cold.
