When to Sow Poppy Seeds

There are many wonderful varieties of poppy, from classic red field poppies to striking bicolour bread seed poppies and vivid orange Californian poppies. Most poppy seeds can be sown directly outdoors from March to May for summer flowering, or late August to October for blooms the following year. Sow when the ground is workable. 

If sowing in autumn, make sure the seeds are in a sheltered area to protect young plants from harsh winter weather. For more details on when to sow your specific variety, check the seed packet before planting.

How to Grow Poppy Seeds

To grow poppy seeds, scatter them thinly over the surface of finely raked soil. Poppies can also be grown in containers and planters, but generally do best when sown in open ground. 

Lightly press the seeds into the soil without covering, as they need light to germinate. Water them gently to settle them in, and keep the soil moist as they grow (but not waterlogged). Poppy seedlings should appear within 7-21 days. Thin out young plants to allow adequate space for growth, keeping stronger seedlings approximately 20cm (8in) apart.
