When to Sow Salad Leaf Seeds

Salad leaf seeds can be sown from early spring to late summer, typically between March and September, depending on your chosen varieties. For a continuous supply, sow seeds every two to three weeks. Early sowings can be started indoors in trays or pots, while later sowings can be done directly outdoors. Check the packet of seeds for variety-specific instructions.

How to Grow Salad Leaves

Sow salad leaf seeds thinly in rows or scatter them across a container filled with moist, well-drained compost. Cover lightly with soil, water gently, and place in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Keep the soil consistently damp but not waterlogged. Once seedlings reach a few centimetres tall, thin them out to give each plant space to grow. Harvest young leaves regularly using scissors, allowing the plants to regrow for multiple cuts throughout the season. Exact depths of planting and needs after transplanting depend on the variety, so check your seed packet for more specific instructions.
