With abundant hybrid vigour, Ilona F1 is quicker to mature than older strains and is very slow to bolt. A top quality, good looking variety which produces large, heavy solid, long-keeping heads with an excellent flavour. Wonderful grated into salads, added to soups or stews - or how about celeriac mash?

Sow celeriac seeds indoors in early spring, from February to April, in modules or trays filled with seed compost. Keep them warm at 15-20°C on a sunny windowsill or propagator. Germination takes 2-3 weeks as the seeds are slow to get going. Harden off seedlings gradually, then plant out after the last frost in late May or early June, spacing 30cm apart in rich, moist soil.
Celeriac is a nutritious vegetable rich in vitamins C and K, potassium, and high in fibre. It supports heart and bone health, aids digestion, and helps boost the immune system. Low in calories and carbs, it is also good for blood sugar control and weight management, making it a healthy alternative to other root vegetables such as potatoes.
Celeriac Ilona seeds can be grown in pots or containers if they are big enough and have good drainage. Growing in pots is an excellent option if you don’t have much garden space. It needs rich, well-draining soil and regular watering to grow well. Celeriac Ilona is strong and grows well in containers as long as the roots have enough room to develop.
