Garlic Extra Early Wight Bulbs (Hardneck) are supplied as 2 bulbs and are the earliest garlic variety we know of, ideal for gardeners looking for an exceptionally early harvest.
From an autumn planting, this reliable hardneck variety can be harvested from as early as late May, making it a standout choice for those eager to enjoy home-grown garlic sooner. It produces clean white-skinned bulbs with brilliant white flesh and a delicious, well-balanced flavour. Once lifted, it will store well through to November or December.
Each year, stock is carefully selected and sourced in partnership with The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, ensuring only the highest quality, expert-grown bulbs are supplied. This tried-and-tested variety performs reliably in UK conditions and is suitable for autumn planting in well-prepared soil.
All bulbs are certified disease and virus free, giving complete confidence from planting through to harvest. Growers should always use trusted sources for planting material rather than shop-bought garlic.
Garlic Types
Hardneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon) generally more hardy than softneck varieties (they are the best choice for northern gardeners) and tend to be larger but with fewer cloves per bulb. They produce scapes in early summer – a strong, single flower stalk that should be removed and used in a range of culinary dishes.
Softneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. sativum) often produce smaller cloves per head but are quicker to mature and will store for longer than hardneck varieties. Softneck types prefer warmer conditions and are generally milder in flavour, with soft stems ideal for plaiting.
