Product Description
This great value self-pollinating runner bean seed collection consists of 2 packets, 1 each of Moonlight (50 seeds) and Firestorm (50 seeds).
Moonlight - This white-flowered runner is partly self-pollinating, which results in bigger yields of its tasty, succulent, stringless pods even in poor summers. Great fresh or can be frozen. Moonlight is also British-bred.
Firestorm - The first ever self-pollinating, red-flowered runner bean, producing masses of stringless, tender and succulent beans. Very reliable variety setting
in even the poorest weather and high temperatures with no help from pollinators. Very attractive in the veg or flower border.
‘Self-Pollinating’ Runner Beans - Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of growing ‘runners’ is their tendency to drop their flowers before the beans have ‘set’, which can happen when the weather is warm and dry. UK plant breeders Tozer Seeds, have successfully crossed runners with dwarf French beans, which self-set quite naturally and are much less affected by temperature and moisture than their runner cousins are. Notable offspring include Moonlight and Firestorm which are virtually self-setting, which is a major advantage when bees are less active on cooler days. They’re also much more tolerant of hot, dry conditions than traditional varieties, ensuring bumper crops whatever the British summer throws at us.
