Shallots Bulbs
Shallot bulbs, or shallot sets, are incredibly easy to grow and highly rewarding. Known for their subtle yet distinctive flavour, they’re perfect for both cooking and pickling. The Greeks gave shallots their name when traders found them in the Palestinian port of Ashkelon. The bulbs reached Europe in the 11th century when Crusaders brought them back from the Middle East.
Our shallot bulbs are delivered in 500g packs, containing between 15-30 healthy bulbs. All of our bulbs are certified disease and virus-free. Our range includes our best-selling spring planting shallot bulb collection as well as popular autumn-planting varieties such as Jermor and Griselle. Find your favourites below or explore our range of onion sets for even more variety for your vegetable patch.

When to Plant Shallot Bulbs
Most shallot bulbs are best planted from mid-March to April, once the risk of heavy frost has passed. If the spring is particularly cold, wait until the soil has warmed slightly to encourage better root development. You can also find hardy varieties, which can be planted from late October onwards – look for autumn shallots if you want to benefit from an earlier harvest next year.
How to Grow Shallot Bulbs
To grow your shallot bulbs, plant them 2cm (3/4in) deep in well-drained, fertile soil, spacing them about 15-20cm (6-8in) apart. Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards and the blunt end facing down. Keep rows 30-45cm (12-28in) apart to give them adequate room to grow. Cover with a light layer of soil, leaving the tips just exposed, and water well.
Once established, your shallots should only need watering during very dry periods. Autumn-planted shallots will benefit from an application of nitrogen-rich fertiliser in late winter. Keep the area weed-free and remove flower stems to help the plant focus on growing bulbs.
